The Hertie Foundation and FENS have awarded the Eric Kandel Young Neuroscientists Prize to Dr Ahrens, on the occasion of World Brain Day.

The Hertie Foundation and FENS are delighted to announce the Eric Kandel Young Neuroscientists Prize is being awarded to Dr Misha B. Ahrens, group leader at Janelia Research Campus, Howard Hughes Medical Institute, USA. 

This Prize honours Dr Ahrens’ scientific achievements, in particular his discovery of the active role of glial cells in the control of motivational states in the zebrafish.


It is the sixth time the Hertie Foundation and FENS have awarded the Prize, which recognises the work of outstanding young scientists and gives them the means to advance their careers as independent researchers. 

The prize is endowed with EUR 100,000, including EUR 50,000 for a scientific cooperation (partnership or mentoring) that extends the laureate’s area of research and promotes his/her scientific career. The prize also includes the invitation to hold the Eric Kandel Prize Lecture at the FENS Forum which will be taking place in July 2020 in Glasgow, UK.
