FENS News, Neuroscience News

The FENS Committee for Higher Education and Training (CHET) has partnered with Nencki Open Lab to offer a new Cambridge Open Lab workshop: “Electronics for Neuroscience: From Basics to Setup Development“.

Workshop details

  • Location: Sheringham, Norfolk, UK
  • Dates: 4-8 May 2025

Programme

This workshop is intended to provide attendees with theoretical and practical knowledge of electronics as applied to neuroscience research. From the absolute basics – voltages and currents – to the inner workings of electronic components such as capacitors, transistors and amplifiers, all the way up to application of microcontrollers in neuroscientific experiments, participants will receive a comprehensive overview of the electronics and their uses in the lab.

The full list of topics covered includes:

  • Voltage, resistance and current, Ohm’s and Kirchoff’s laws
  • Tools in electronics – multimeters, oscilloscopes
  • Basic elements: resistors, capacitors, diodes
  • Transistors and logic gates
  • Basics of computer computations
  • Filters and amplifiers
  • Sensors, motors, servos
  • Basics of microcontrollers
  • Synchronisation of data streams with microcontrollers
  • Controlling devices in experimental setups
  • Closed-loop experiments

Travel grants & fee waivers

The fee to participate in this workshop is GBP 375, covering the cost of accommodation and food. Those interested in receiving a FENS travel grant or fee waiver should apply here by 1 April 2025.
