SPECIAL ISSUE CALL FOR PAPERS

Addiction

Guest Editors: Michel Barrot (University of Strasbourg, France), Antonello Bonci (National Institute of Drug Abuse, USA), Barry Everitt (University of Cambridge, UK) & Rita Goldstein (Mount Sinai, USA)

Estimated date of publication: December 2018.

Addiction: from Latin addÄ«ctus v: to be enslaved; n: a debt slave.

Psychoactive drug use and the potential for addiction, or compulsion to use, may be as old as mankind. Public perceptions of addiction have swung from being viewed as a moral failing or character flaw to the current view of addiction as a chronic disease of the brain. The current worldwide opioid epidemic only highlights our need to understand it more completely. Modern neurobiological work has made tremendous strides in identifying consequences of drug use and neural circuits underlying addiction, but there is much yet to be learned. What is the role of the environment? How are individual differences manifested? What is the influence of the developmental stage? What underlies successful treatment?

For this special issue, we wish to put together a series of empirical papers, targeted reviews and opinion pieces that will describe our latest understanding of addiction. The level of analysis for these questions extends from genes, molecules, circuits, to behavior and environment. The topic includes addiction to alcohol, cigarettes, gambling, drugs of abuse, prescription drugs, and food.
