Responsibilities and tasks

The postdoctoral position is based at the Centre for Biological Sciences, Department for Biological Sciences and Pathobiology, Institute of Pharmacology and Toxicology at the University of Veterinary Medicine Vienna in the team of Prof. Marion Bankstahl. The research focus of the working group is on the further development of translational therapeutic approaches for the prevention of epilepsies and other insult-related brain diseases as well as the evidence-based optimisation of pain therapy. As part of its work on translational issues, the research group pays particular attention to animal husbandry that is orientated towards the needs of laboratory animals and their scientific evaluation. Pharmacology and Toxicology is embedded in the Centre for Biological Sciences at the University of Veterinary Medicine Vienna and has access to excellent and modern research and teaching infrastructure

We are looking for a scientist with working experience in laboratory animal experiments, preferably in animal models of neurological diseases or pain.

The candidate will be responsible in particular for the following tasks in research and teaching:

  • Participation in and independent processing of research projects in the above-mentioned subject areas
  • Implementation and establishment of animal models and behavioural studies (rat, mouse)
  • Supervision and guidance of doctoral students, PhD students and diploma students
  • Independent preparation and teaching of courses and taking examinations
  • Acquisition of third-party funding
  • General administrative and organisational tasks

Necessary education, qualifications and knowledge on taking up employment

  • Completed studies in veterinary medicine, medicine or other natural scientific studies and completed PhD or doctorate
  • Extensive experience in animal experimentation with mammals, documented by publications
  • Experience in writing and publishing scientific papers in peer-reviewed journals  Good knowledge of English (B2)

Desirable qualifications and skills

  • Very good team and communication skills, high level of commitment and reliability
  • Independent, precise and solution-orientated way of working
  • Experience in planning and conducting (long-term) experimental studies (preferably in animal models for neurological diseases or pain)
  • Experience in behavioural studies, pharmacokinetic analyses, drug analysis, immunohistochemistry
  • Experience with methods replacing animal experiments
  • Experience in the acquisition of funding.
  • Experience in the supervision of students
  • Good knowledge of German (B2)

Minimum salary

The minimum salaries at universities are governed by a collective bargaining agreement. At the level given above, the minimum salary amounts to EUR 4,752.30 gross per month (based on full-time employment).
