Deadline: 10 December 2024

Country: Ireland

Department: Psychiatry and Neurobehavioural Science

Description:

Funded Ph.D. Studentship, planned start date 01 March 2025 (with flexibility)

We are seeking a highly motivated and skilled PhD student to be co-supervised by Prof Sarah Kittel-Schneider, Dr Alice Lucey, and Prof John Cryan. This PhD project will deliver exciting new research which provides a unique opportunity for the co-creation of dietary strategies to better support the consumption of gut microbiota-targeted foods in children and adolescents with Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). Adopting qualitative and quantitative research approaches, current barriers to consumption will be identified and considered within strategy design which will be tailored for this cohort. Research from this project will inform future strategies for nutrition intervention that targets the microbiota-gut-brain axis in children and adolescents with ADHD. These results will inform how diet interacts with the microbiota-gut-brain axis to influence ADHD symptoms with implications for other neurodevelopmental disorders.

The successful candidate will join a vibrant learning environment working as part of the multidisciplinary Microbiota-Gut-Brain Axis team within APC Microbiome Ireland, which includes neuroscientists, nutritionists, bioinformaticians, physicians, molecular biologists, psychologists, exercise physiologists, and psychiatrists.

A background in Nutrition is necessary and qualification of Registered Dietitian is essential. The candidate should have previous experience leading qualitative interviews. Prior experience with nutritional counselling in vulnerable groups is highly valued. As there will be a nutrition intervention component, previous experience in research is also encouraged. The successful candidate will have the ability to work on their own initiative and as part of a team and possess excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
