Job ID: 120055
PhD positions in Neuroscience
Position: Ph.D. Student
Deadline: 31 October 2024
Contract Length: 3 years
City: Alicante
Country: Spain
Institution: Instituto de Neurociencias de Alicante
Department: Cellular and Systems Biology
Description:
We are searching for highly motivated, hard-working and enthusiastic students with an interest in Neuroscience. Our group investigates the molecular and cell biological mechanisms that wire neural circuits for high-order cognitive processing and emotional behavior. We have a strong interest on tackling how dysfunction of these processes drives brain diseases, ranging from schizophrenia or depression to demyelinating disorders, and discovering ways to harness them for therapeutics.
Projects will focus on: 1) regulation of neuronal protein synthesis by novel multiprotein complexes; its modulation during cognitive tasks and stress; and identification of synapse-level modulatory switches; 2) control of myelin plasticity and repair by non-conventional glutamate receptors. Tools will involve a variety of genetically-modified mice, RiboTrap/RNAseq analysis, human studies and development of therapeutics (Nature Rev Neuroscience, 17, 623, 2016; Nature Medicine, 19, 1030, 2013; eLife e71575, 2021; Cell Reports 30, 112477, 2023). Candidates with an interest in biochemistry, cellular/molecular biology, mouse genetics, behavior and brain disease are encouraged to apply.
Our lab provides an alive scientific environment at the Instituto de Neurociencias (IN) de Alicante, where multidisciplinary research teams explore the development, structure and function of the nervous system. Our lab is part of an extended program interested in links between synapses, circuits and behavior (https://in.umh-csic.es/en/programas/synaptic-modulation-of-neural-circuits-and-behavior/), and is engaged in international collaborations that allow us to expand knowledge and resources.
A strong academic record, a Master in neuroscience or a related discipline, and knowledge of English is required. Previous experience in cell biology, bioinformatics, data analysis or cell culture will be valued. The position will be funded for 3 years; competitive candidates should be committed to becoming self-funded with fellowships. Candidates should submit CV and contact information for 3 references to: Dr. Isabel Pérez-Otaño, otano@umh.es.
