PhD position in multiple sclerosis research

Position: Ph.D. Student

Deadline: 30 June 2024

Contract Length: at least 3 years

City: Munich

Country: Germany

Institution: Technical University of Munich

Department: Department of Neuroradiology

Description:

The Department of Neuroradiology of the Technical University of Munich offers a PhD position in systems neuroscience research of multiple sclerosis. This project is funded by the German Multiple Sclerosis Society (DMSG) and aims to investigate cerebellar structural correlates of fatigue in multiple sclerosis (MS). Longitudinal, multimodal magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) data including T1w, FLAIR and diffusion-weighted (dMRI) sequences will be analyzed and cerebellar microstructural characteristics of both gray and white matter derived, such that associations with the onset and development of fatigue in MS may be statistically assessed.

Applicants should have finished a university degree in psychology, neuroscience, medicine, biology, computer science or related disciplines. Candidates should have strong analytical and organizational skills. Prior experience with large cohort patient datasets is an advantage. Previous experience with the analysis of T1w and/or dMRI data (e.g., for T1w data FreeSurfer or FSL; for dMRI preferably MRtirx3, but also FSL), as well as basic statistical education is highly desired. Programming skills in, e.g., Matlab, R, Python, or Unix shell scripting are also a plus. Candidates who lack the aforementioned skills should have a strong motivation to develop these skills during their training. We are searching for candidates who are able to work independently and who have demonstrated excellent presentation and writing skills. The applicant will be expected to interact and collaborate with colleagues from different disciplines.

Neuroimaging scanning facilities (MRI 3T scanner) and computer infrastructure are entirely available at the TUM Neuroimaging Center (TUM-NIC).

The candidate is planned to be assigned to an appropriate PhD Program at our institution (also depending on his background).

Salary is according to the guidelines of the German Research Foundation (DFG) and German TVöD (65% position). As of August 2024, the position is available for at least three years.

Candidates may contact Dr. Dr. Marlene Tahedl (marlene.tahedl@tum.de) for more detailed information or directly send their applications including a letter of motivation, CV, and possibly references.
