POSTDOCTORAL SCHOLARSHIP IN NEURAL TISSUE IMAGING

Position: Post-doctoral Position

Deadline: 14 June 2024

City: Umeå

Country: Sweden

Institution: Umeå University

Department:

Description:

A postdoctoral scholarship in neural cell biology and image analysis is available at Dept. of Molecular Biology, Umeå University, Sweden. The department has English as working language and is an internationalized research environment of around 180 persons.

This scholarship is for a postdoc who aims for increased knowledge in neural tissue cell biology by a combination of microscopy techniques. The project can be adapted to the knowledge and experience of the selected candidate. We study the olfactory epithelium of the laboratory mouse.  This neuroepithelium harbors olfactory sensory neurons, supporting, microvillar and tissue stem cells. The neurons turnover throughout life which provides an opportunity for studying neuronal differentiation including connectivity. We recently identified a novel organelle in olfactory sensory neurons by correlative light electron microscopy (CLEM) (Nature Comm 2022 13:6889). Currently, confocal microscopy as well as FIB-SEM and SR-SIM are used to address substructural maturation of these neurons.

Umeå University is very well equipped for tissue imaging https://www.umu.se/en/research/infrastructure/biochemical-imaging-centre-umea-bicu/ and https://www.umu.se/en/research/infrastructure/umea-centre-for-electron-microscopy-ucem/). More microscopic techniques are also available by national technique platforms. The scholarship is for 2 years and should be exempted from Swedish income tax.

Before applying consider these important points and highlight these in your application:

  • – What are the methods that you are particularly strong in?
  • – What is your knowledge regarding cell interactions in tissue, cellular substructures and protein subcellular localization? Do you have experience in histology and animal experiments?
  • – Describe your interest in training in cellular image analysis.

In the application include: 1) a CV including a list of publications, 2) date and proof of successful PhD exam (if you are close to defending you may still apply), 3) in case you are selected for interview, we will afterwards ask for contact information for reference persons and 4) to-the-points personal statement commenting and highlighting the points mentioned here above.

We will have continuous selection for interview and starting date can be adapted. For questions contact anna.berghard@umu.se
