The programme will provide full or partial support for the following educational activities in all of Europe:

  2. Scheduled for the winter season 2009/2010, this school takes advantage of local arrangements and organization which have been established in previous years. Hence, applications must focus on the Scientific Programme only. Duration of the School: 1 week. The daily schedule includes 4-5 daily lectures of 40 minutes each with an additional 20 minutes for discussion and 3 ?poster sessions. The School accepts 40 students and young scientists that provide evidence of knowledge and productivity.

The budget will be administered by Prof. Alois Saria who serves as the local organizer. However, proposals for the Winter School will have to consider that total travel costs for teachers should not exceed 10.000EUR.

For details on application see General Guidelines and specific instructions on form Lecture-based PENS-Hertie Winter School.

  3. In collaboration with local and partner organizations PENS may support a limited number of lecture-based or practical schools in Europe by providing each up to 20.000€. Applications for this school category should include a scientific programme and information on the proposed location and facilities. Minimum duration of the School: 1 week.

The number of participants should not exceed 40 students and young scientists. The money granted by PENS should be used primarily to enable the participation of students with few resources. Selection of students will be entrusted to the school organizers, in accordance to PENS Guidelines, with final approval by the PENS committee.

For details on application see General Guidelines and specific instructions included in the section on PENS partially-supported Schools.

  4. European academic research centres embarking on new field of research may request a visit by a team of about 3 experts to advise local investigators. It is expected that some local expertise already exists, and that the lectures by the experts will attract a sizeable audience of researchers as well as students. PENS will set up the team and pay the travel costs, whereas all local costs will be met by the applicants. Average duration of the visit: 3 days.

For details see the application form PENS Partnership Programme.

  5. PENS is inviting proposals from strong Neuroscience Institutions to hold recurrent Theoretical & Practical Summer Courses. Support for the Training Centre courses will initially be awarded for 3 years. Funding may be extended for other three-year periods upon a successful review by the PENS Committee, on the basis of clear evidence of teaching excellence. The institution selected will be given the title "PENS Training Centre".

Applications for a Training Centre should consider the General Guidelines and must include a theoretical and a practical training programme for each of the courses to be held in the 3 years. The practical training programme must cover in the same year or in subsequent years, several different techniques of importance to neuroscientists (anatomy, animal and/or human electrophysiology, imaging, animal behaviour, molecular biology, computational neuroscience, etc.).

The anticipated duration of the school is 3-4 weeks. Applicants are required to provide a detailed proposal for activities and faculty in 2009 and a concise outline of plans for 2010 and 2011. Information and documentation on the proposed location and on the available laboratory facilities is of paramount importance. The "PENS Training Centre" should receive 15-25 PhD students and young scientists with the background required to meet the intense training programme anticipated for this school. Registration fees for the students (covering also lunch and lodging) must not exceed 500€ . PENS will provide a budget of up to 60.000€ per year.

For details see the application form PENS Training Centre.
